Myth #1: Colic is caused by gas trapped in the stomach.
Some still believe that there are specific causes why babies become colicky. One of these is the presence of gas in the stomach. This belief is often corroborated when you tap on your baby’s tummy and hear a hollow sound that indicates gas. It is quite possible though that the gas in his stomach is only a result of and not a cause of colic. Gas can also contribute to even more crying but not necessarily cause is. Gas is therefore not the answer to what is colic.
One thing is also sure— even experts are not certain what causes colic. There are various theories but they are all inconclusive. It is possible that colic is due to immature digestive and nervous systems. Some babies are also thought to be more sensitive to stimulation than others. There are also theories that suggest that parental interaction and the mother’s diet may play a role at promoting colic.
Myth #2: It is a serious medical emergency.
You may not believe it but colic is actually a harmless and even a normal infant condition. Of course, not every baby will develop colic. Some just do while others don’t. If you do end up with a colicky baby, you shouldn’t panic. If you just try to bear it out for a couple of months, colic will eventually go away without medical treatment.
Ask a doctor what is colic and he will definitely tell you that it is not a serious medical condition. It is, however, important to establish that your baby does indeed have colic and not a serious condition. In a way, it is wrong to immediately conclude that all bouts of uncontrolled crying are cases of colic. You should at least take note of all of your baby’s symptoms. Ask your doctor about them when you drop by for a visit. Although colic can be very frustrating, you would probably be more relieved to hear that your baby has it instead of some illness.
Myth #3: There are proven solutions to treat colic.
Scientists cannot yet isolate the main causes of colic and provide the answer to what is colic. It therefore follows that there are currently no known cures for colic. The most effective treatment is to simply wait it out. You may however want to try some safe remedies that may decrease colic bouts.
There are no clear answers to what is colic. For some babies, it is simply a fact of life. As a parent, you may just have to learn how to cope as best as you can.
Colic Tip #1
Be Patient: Colic problems will lessen with age, so realize that things will get better in the future. In the mean time, try to stay calm, reassuring and loving. The best thing for your child is a well-rested parent.
Colic Tip #2
Feed Less But More Often: Whether breast feeding or bottle feeding, try feeding a baby with colic half as much as usual and twice as often. Little tummies can’t handle getting too much too fast and the breakdown of lactose can cause an increase in intestinal gas.
Colic Tip #3
Enlist Help: One if the best things you can do if you have a colicky baby is to give yourself a break and get away from it all. Get your spouse, parents, aunts, uncles or even a babysitter to lend a hand for a while so you can rest and recharge your batteries.
